Happy Father’s Day

Fathers are called to model the Love of God.

The ArchAngel Institute urges all to turn their hearts back to the Fathers.  The Fathers of the Church and the Fathers of the Republic.  As we urge here …

As urges this great hymn . . . sung tonight at Mass at St. John’s and here taken from the United Methodist hymnal . . . (click for piano accompaniment.)

710. Faith of Our Fathers

Text: Frederick W. Faber, 1814-1863
Music:Henri F. Hemy, 1818-1888; adapt. by James G. Walton, 1821-1905
Tune: ST. CATHERINE, Meter: 88.88.88

Faith of our fathers, living still,
in spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;
O how our hearts beat high
with joy whene’er we hear that glorious word!
Refrain:
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death
.

2. Faith of our fathers, we will strive
to win all nations unto thee;
and through the truth that comes from God,
we all shall then be truly free.
(Refrain)

3. Faith of our fathers, we will love
both friend and foe in all our strife;
and preach thee, too, as love knows
how by kindly words and virtuous life.
(Refrain)

UPDATE SUNDAY MORNING:  Here is a very interesting discussion of this hymn, including discussion of a verse on Mary now missing from most Catholic hymnals and a verse on Irish nationalism.

A verse added to the Catholic and many Protestant hymnals seeks to include faithful mothers as well.

Our mothers, too, oppressed and wronged,
still lived their faith in dignity;
Their brave example gives us strength
To work for justice ceaselessly….

Here is some analysis — critical analysis – of that recently added verse.  (The comments are a riot.)

Again, Happy Father’s Day!
